Cloak Bridge

About

The Cloak Bridge in Český Krumlov is one of the castle’s most dramatic architectural features, rising high above the deep moat and connecting the upper palace with the Baroque theatre and gardens. Its name comes from the covered passageways—stacked in three levels—that allowed nobles to move between parts of the complex unseen, protected from weather and public view. One fascinating detail is that the bridge was built in stages: the lower stone arches date to the Renaissance, while the upper wooden galleries were added later to accommodate the expanding court. Inside the covered walkways, visitors can admire the interplay of stone, timber, and open arches framing sweeping views of the old town and the Vltava River. The bridge also offers a unique vantage point over the castle’s famous bear moat, a tradition maintained since the Rosenberg era. As part of the castle’s ceremonial route, the Cloak Bridge once hosted processions and theatrical entrances to the Baroque theatre. Today it remains one of the most photographed spots in Český Krumlov, combining engineering ingenuity with striking visual drama.

Location

The Cloak Bridge (Plášťový most) is Spain of Český Krumlov Castle, connecting the castle's fourth and fifth courtyards in the western part of the complex. It rises about 40 meters above a deep moat and spans 30 meters, built on massive stone pillars with five tiers in total. The bridge has three floors of massive pillars, an open crosswalk that visitors can freely access, and two covered galleries above, with sculptures of Christian saints installed along the upper level. The lower passage links the Masquerade Hall with the Baroque Theatre, while the top passage connects the Castle Gallery with the castle gardens. Access to the bridge is free and open 24 hours, and it offers some of the best panoramic views of the historic town and the Vltava River. Nearby, you can explore the State Castle and Chateau, climb the 86-meter-high Castle Tower for sweeping views, and visit the world's best-preserved Baroque Theatre. The French-style Castle Garden with its cascading fountain and the rococo Bellaria Summer Palace are a short walk away, as is the Revolving Auditorium open-air theatre. The charming Latrán district, Svornosti Square with its Town Hall, the Church of St. Vitus, the Monastery of the Minorites, and the scenic Vltava River promenade are all just minutes away in the UNESCO-listed historic center.
