Church of St. Vitus

About

The Church of St. Vitus is one of the defining landmarks of Český Krumlov, rising gracefully above the old town with its slender spire and elegant Gothic lines. Built in the 15th century, it served as the spiritual heart of the Rosenberg estate, and several members of this influential noble family were buried here. One interesting fact is that the church once housed a rare Gothic monstrance decorated with pearls from local rivers, a symbol of the region’s wealth and craftsmanship. Inside, the atmosphere is serene and luminous. The high rib‑vaulted ceiling draws the eye upward, while the tall stained‑glass windows fill the nave with soft colour. The main altar, created in the Baroque period, features a dramatic depiction of St. Vitus surrounded by gilded ornamentation. Visitors can also admire side chapels dedicated to local saints, a beautifully carved pulpit, and a historic organ whose rich sound still accompanies concerts and services. The church remains an active place of worship, blending centuries of artistic heritage with living tradition.

Location

The Church of St. Vitus is a striking late-Gothic church located on Kostelní Street in the historic center of Český Krumlov, perched on a promontory above the meandering Vltava River. It overlooks the town’s main square, Náměstí Svornosti, and is just a short 10-minute walk from the square, up a slight incline. Built between 1407 and 1439 on the foundations of an older church from 1309, it is one of the town’s most important monuments and was declared a National Cultural Monument in 1995. Nearby, you can explore Náměstí Svornosti with its 16th-century Town Hall and the 1716 Marian Plague Column. Just a few minutes’ walk away are the State Castle and Chateau Český Krumlov, the Egon Schiele Art Centrum, the Museum Fotoatelier Seidel, the Regional Museum, and the charming Latrán district. The Church of St. Vitus is also close to the town’s renovated neo-Romanesque Synagogue, marionette museums, and the scenic riverside paths along the Vltava, making it an ideal starting point for wandering through UNESCO-listed Český Krumlov.
