Český Krumlov Castle

About

Český Krumlov Castle is the town’s defining landmark, a vast complex rising above the Vltava with over 700 years of history. Once home to the Rosenbergs, Eggenbergs, and Schwarzenbergs, it reflects layers of Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque architecture. One of its most intriguing facts is that it houses one of the oldest surviving Baroque theatres in the world, complete with original stage machinery and hand‑painted backdrops that still function today. Inside, visitors can explore richly furnished state rooms, including the Golden Hall with its ornate wooden ceiling and the Schwarzenberg portrait gallery. The castle tower offers panoramic views of the old town’s winding streets and terracotta roofs. The Baroque Castle Garden, with its grand cascade fountain and rotating open‑air theatre, adds another unexpected highlight. The complex also preserves a unique bear moat, a tradition dating back to the Rosenbergs. Together, these spaces create a vivid journey through the cultural and political life of Bohemia.

Location

Český Krumlov Castle is the dominant landmark of the town, perched on a steep rocky promontory sculpted by the Vltava River from the south and the Polečnice stream from the north. It sits above the refined Renaissance and Baroque burgher architecture of the historic center, overlooking the entire town in the South Bohemian Region of the Czech Republic. This is the second-largest castle and chateau complex in the Czech Republic, rivalled in size only by Prague Castle, and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1992 along with the town’s historic centre. Nearby, you can explore the multiple castle courtyards, the unique Baroque Theatre, the Masquerade Hall with its special decorations, and the castle garden with a cascading fountain, French flowerbeds, and the rococo Bellaria Summerhouse. The 86-meter-high Castle Tower offers panoramic views over the Vltava River and the red-roofed town. Just steps away is the slender neo-Gothic tower of the late Gothic Church of St. Vitus, which together with the castle tower forms the town’s characteristic silhouette. The UNESCO-listed Historic Center of Český Krumlov is right below, with its charming streets, port 1560 exhibition complex, Museum Fotoatelier Seidel, Český Krumlov Monasteries, the Synagogue, and the Egon Schiele Atelier on the riverbank. For a change of pace, you can walk along the Vltava, take a wooden raft cruise, or visit the nearby Dívčí Kámen Castle Ruins and Zlatá Koruna Monastery.
