The Great Synagogue in Plzeň is one of the largest synagogues in the world and a defining landmark of the city. Completed in 1893, it blends Moorish Revival and Romanesque elements, giving it a distinctive façade with twin towers and ornate decorative details. One of the most interesting facts is that the original design was even more monumental, but plans were scaled down to avoid overshadowing nearby Christian churches—an unusual example of architectural diplomacy in the 19th century. Inside, the synagogue impresses with its vast central nave, richly painted walls, and a beautifully restored organ that still accompanies concerts today. The women’s gallery offers a striking view of the interior’s symmetry and colour. Exhibitions throughout the building tell the story of Plzeň’s Jewish community, its flourishing before the Second World War, and the tragic losses that followed. Carefully preserved Torah ornaments, photographs, and personal items provide a moving connection to the families who once worshipped here. Today, the Great Synagogue serves both as a place of remembrance and a vibrant cultural venue.
Plzeň Czech Republic
The Great Synagogue is located in Plzeň, Czech Republic, at Sady Pětatřicátníků 11, within the Smetanovy sady park area slightly south of the historic city center. Its address is also listed as Smetanovy sady 5, 301 00 Plzeň. The synagogue was built to serve the traditional Czech Jewish congregation and was designed by architect Manuel Klotz. After extensive renovation at the end of the 20th century, it now also functions as a concert and exhibition hall, thanks to its outstanding acoustics and unique atmosphere. Renowned artists, including Karel Gott, have performed here. Inside, the interior features vaulted blue ceilings with gold patterns, elegant wooden pews, arched walls, grand chandeliers, and beautiful stained glass windows. Nearby attractions make this synagogue an easy stop on a central city walking tour. St. Bartholomew’s Cathedral sits directly opposite the square, and the Republic Square with its historic town hall is just a short walk away. The Old Synagogue is within short walking distance, hidden in a courtyard in the Smetanovy sady neighborhood, close to the J.K. Tyl Theatre. Also nearby are the Pilsner Urquell Brewery, the Plzeň Historical Underground, the Puppet Museum, the Great Synagogue, Techmania Science Center, and the Adolf Loos American Bar, all easily accessible on foot.
