Smetanovy Sady

About

Smetanovy Sady in Plzeň is one of the city’s most elegant urban parks, laid out in the late 19th century as a representative promenade near the Grand Theatre. Designed in the spirit of European city gardens, it features long tree‑lined alleys, ornate flowerbeds, and carefully planned vistas that once served as a fashionable meeting place for Plzeň’s bourgeoisie. One of the most interesting facts is that the park was named after composer Bedřich Smetana, and for decades it hosted open‑air concerts that helped cultivate the city’s musical life. Inside the park, visitors can admire historic statues, seasonal floral displays, and the graceful colonnade of the former spa pavilion, which adds a touch of old‑world charm. Benches along the main avenue offer views of mature chestnut and plane trees, especially striking in spring and autumn. The park also forms a cultural corridor, linking the theatre district with nearby museums and cafés. Smetanovy Sady remains a refined green retreat in the heart of Plzeň, ideal for quiet walks, reading, or simply enjoying the rhythm of the city.

Location

Smetanovy Sady is a city park located in the Jižní Předměstí district of Plzeň, Czech Republic, forming the southern part of the city’s ring of parks built on the site of the former medieval city walls. It stretches from the J. K. Tyl Theatre building to Bedřicha Smetany Street, where it connects with Kopeckého sady, and is bounded by the street of the same name on the north and south. Nearby, the grand J. K. Tyl Theatre – Plzeň’s main opera, drama, and ballet stage – stands directly adjacent to the park, surrounded by chestnut and linden trees. Just behind the theatre, about 100 meters away, is the Plzeň City Library, where a statue of Josef Smetana greets visitors. To the east, Kopeckého sady continues the green belt, with colorful flower beds and a fountain that plays music from Smetana’s compositions every hour. The Museum of West Bohemia, one of the largest museums in the Czech Republic with over two million exhibits, is found at the left edge of this park chain. Also nearby are the Great Synagogue, the Old Synagogue hidden in a courtyard in the Smetanovy sady neighborhood, the Plzeň Historical Underground, St. Bartholomew’s Cathedral on Republic Square, the Pilsner Urquell Brewery, and Techmania Science Center, all within easy walking distance, making Smetanovy Sady a perfect green break on a central city sightseeing tour.
