ZOO Plzeň

About

ZOO Plzeň is one of the most diverse zoological parks in Central Europe, known for its naturalistic habitats and its unique connection with the adjacent botanical garden. Opened in 1926, it has grown into a sprawling landscape where animals live among carefully designed ecosystems. One of the most interesting facts is that the zoo is a leader in breeding rare species, including the Przewalski’s horse and several endangered reptiles, making it an important centre for conservation. Inside, visitors can explore themed zones such as the African Savannah, the Asian Highlands, and the Amazonian Pavilion, each offering close encounters with animals in environments that mirror their natural homes. The Madagascar section stands out with its lively lemurs, while the Czech countryside exhibit highlights native species often overlooked in traditional zoos. The botanical garden adds another layer of discovery with exotic plants, greenhouses, and geological displays. Together, they create a rich blend of wildlife, landscape, and education that makes ZOO Plzeň one of the city’s most rewarding family attractions.

Location

ZOO Plzeň, officially the Zoological and Botanical Garden of the City of Plzeň, sits in the Lochotín district on the northern edge of Plzeň, Czech Republic. Nestled among wooded hills above the Mže River valley, it’s the second oldest zoo in the country and one of the most visited attractions in the region. Open daily from spring through autumn, the zoo combines animal exhibits with extensive botanical collections, making it a place to meet fauna, admire flora, and explore themed expositions all in one visit. A peaceful Japanese meditation garden and colorful botanical zones add contrast to the lively animal pavilions. What’s nearby: Right next door is DinoPark Plzeň, where life-sized moving dinosaurs delight kids and adults alike – you can buy a combined ticket for both. The zoo is close to Lochotín Park, a green space with walking paths and a café that locals frequent. From here it’s a short ride to Plzeň’s city center: Republic Square with its Renaissance Town Hall and the towering Gothic spire of St. Bartholomew’s Cathedral, the Great Synagogue, and the hands-on Techmania Science Center. Beer fans can head to the famous Plzeňský Prazdroj Brewery and the Brewery Museum, both within easy reach. With wildlife, dinosaurs, history, and science all clustered together, ZOO Plzeň makes an ideal base for a full day exploring the best of the city.
