Underground Plzeň Historical Exhibition

About

The Underground Plzeň Historical Exhibition reveals a hidden world beneath the city’s streets, a labyrinth of medieval cellars, wells, and passageways carved between the 13th and 19th centuries. Originally built for storage, brewing, and protection, this network once stretched for kilometres and formed an essential part of Plzeň’s economic life. One of the most interesting facts is that the cool, stable temperatures of these cellars played a key role in early beer production long before modern refrigeration. Inside, visitors walk through atmospheric tunnels lined with stone walls, discovering preserved wells, ice pits, and secret escape routes used during times of danger. Exhibits along the route explain how merchants stored food, how brewers kept their beer cool, and how townspeople sought shelter during fires or conflicts. A highlight is the authentic water tower mechanism, demonstrating the ingenious engineering that supplied the medieval city. The combination of archaeology, urban history, and immersive underground architecture makes this exhibition one of Plzeň’s most memorable experiences.

Location

The Underground Plzeň Historical Exhibition is located beneath the historic city center of Plzeň, Czech Republic, at Veleslavínova 6, in the same building that houses the Brewery Museum. Its entrance is through the Brewery Museum’s ticket office, making it easy to combine both visits. This underground complex is one of the largest of its kind in Central Europe, consisting of nearly 20 kilometers of cellars, corridors, wells, drainage tunnels, and sewers built from the late 13th century onwards. The guided tour covers an approximately 800-meter route, 5 to 7 meters underground, where you can see medieval cellars, water wells, and remnants of craft workshops, still-houses, and malt houses that once served the city. The tour lasts about 60 minutes and offers a fascinating glimpse into daily life in a medieval city, with displays of archaeological finds and explanations of the underground’s role in storage, brewing, and defense. Nearby, the main attractions of Plzeň are all within easy walking distance. The Pilsner Urquell Brewery, the city’s most famous landmark, is just over a mile away. St. Bartholomew’s Cathedral and the historic Republic Square are close by, along with the Puppet Museum, the Great Synagogue, the Museum of West Bohemia, and Techmania Science Center, making the Historical Underground a perfect stop on a central city sightseeing route.
