Museum of Puppets

About

The Museum of Puppets in Plzeň celebrates the city’s long tradition of puppet theatre, a craft that shaped Czech popular culture for more than a century. Housed in a historic townhouse near the city centre, the museum brings together original marionettes, stage sets, and props from famous local troupes, including the legendary Skupa Theatre. One of the most intriguing facts is that Plzeň is the birthplace of Spejbl and Hurvínek, two iconic puppet characters who became international stars and ambassadors of Czech humour. Inside, visitors can explore atmospheric exhibitions that trace the evolution of puppetry from simple wooden figures to sophisticated theatrical characters. Workshops and backstage displays reveal how marionettes are carved, painted, and animated, offering a rare look at the craftsmanship behind the scenes. Interactive stations allow guests to try basic puppet manipulation, making the experience lively and hands‑on. The museum’s charming blend of artistry, nostalgia, and storytelling makes it a delightful stop for families and anyone curious about this uniquely Czech tradition.
