The Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary stands just off the Great Square in the historic centre of Hradec Králové, close to Na Kropáčce Street and the upper city fortifications. Originally built as a Jesuit church in the 17th century, it brings a different character to the old town ensemble, contrasting its Baroque and early modern forms with the nearby Gothic brick cathedral and Renaissance tower. A short walk from the church leads you up Gočár’s staircase, one of the city’s notable architectural features, or out to the Bono Publico staircase and the former Bishop’s Palace on the edge of the old fortifications. Within a few minutes you can reach Velké náměstí with the White Tower, the Cathedral of the Holy Spirit, the Marian column and the Gallery of Modern Art, or descend towards the Elbe to find the East Bohemian Museum and the Art Nouveau Hučák power station with its exhibition on renewable energy.
