White Tower

About

The White Tower in Hradec Králové is the city’s proud Gothic sentinel, rising above the historic centre with its distinctive pale stone and elegant Renaissance crown. Built in the 16th century, it once served as a watchtower, bell tower, and symbol of civic prestige. Its most famous resident is the massive Augustine bell, weighing nearly 10 tons, one of the largest in the Czech Republic and still admired for its deep, resonant tone. Inside, the tower combines history with modern presentation. Visitors ascend a spacious, gradually rising staircase that makes the climb surprisingly comfortable. Along the way, exhibitions reveal the tower’s construction, the evolution of timekeeping, and the story of the city’s bells. A fascinating feature is the unique clock mechanism with a transparent face, allowing you to see the gears in motion from inside the tower. At the top, a panoramic gallery opens over the Elbe valley, the cathedral, and the orderly urban layout shaped by 19th‑century architects. The view is especially atmospheric at sunset, when the city glows in warm colours.

White Tower
Location

The White Tower is a Renaissance bell and watchtower rising above the historic heart of Hradec Králové, standing on the western side of Velké náměstí, the main square of the old town. Built from light Hořice sandstone, it is the tallest landmark in the city and offers panoramic views over the roofs of Hradec Králové and towards the distant ridges of the Giant and Orlické Mountains. Right next to the tower stands the brick Gothic Cathedral of the Holy Spirit and the smaller church of St Clement, together forming a striking ensemble visible from many parts of the city. On the same square you will find historic canon houses, the Marian plague column and the Gallery of Modern Art in its elegant early 20th‑century building. From Velké náměstí it is only a short walk down charming alleys to the Elbe riverfront with the East Bohemian Museum and further to the Art Nouveau Hučák hydroelectric power plant and nearby parks, making the White Tower an ideal starting point for exploring Hradec Králové.
