Cathedral of the Holy Spirit

About

The Cathedral of the Holy Spirit is the spiritual heart of Hradec Králové, rising in deep red brick beside the White Tower. Founded in the early 14th century, it is one of the finest Gothic structures in eastern Bohemia. Its twin towers, added in the Renaissance, give the cathedral its distinctive silhouette and reflect the city’s long architectural evolution. The building has survived fires, wars, and Baroque alterations, yet its medieval character remains strikingly intact. Inside, the cathedral feels solemn and atmospheric. The main treasure is the late Gothic altar from 1494, richly carved with scenes from the life of Christ. Visitors can also admire the Renaissance pulpit, elegant vaulting, and several valuable epitaphs that reveal the stories of local noble families. A notable curiosity is the so‑called “Devil’s Stone,” a dark boulder embedded in the wall, tied to a local legend about a failed attempt to steal the cathedral’s bells. The interior’s calm contrasts beautifully with the lively square outside, making the cathedral a place to pause, reflect, and appreciate centuries of craftsmanship.

Location

The Cathedral of the Holy Spirit stands on the edge of Velké náměstí, the Great Square in the historic centre of Hradec Králové, forming the spiritual heart of the city. It is a late Gothic brick basilica with two slender towers, traditionally linked with Queen Elizabeth Richeza in the early 14th century, and serves as the main church of the local diocese. Right beside it rises the Renaissance White Tower, the city’s tallest landmark and a popular lookout with wide views over Hradec Králové and the distant mountains. Around the cathedral you can admire the canon houses, the Marian plague column, the Old Town Hall and the elegant building of the Gallery of Modern Art, all grouped around Velké náměstí. From the square, narrow streets lead quickly down to the Elbe riverfront with the East Bohemian Museum and the Hučák hydroelectric power plant, so a visit to the cathedral easily combines with architecture, museums and riverside walks in a compact area.
