Jirásek Gardens

About

Jirásek Gardens in Hradec Králové is a peaceful riverside park shaped by early 20th‑century urban planning, offering a blend of greenery, quiet corners, and subtle architectural details. Named after writer Alois Jirásek, the garden forms part of the elegant embankment zone designed by architect Jan Kotěra, whose influence is still visible in the park’s layout and surrounding buildings. Inside the gardens, visitors can enjoy tree‑lined paths, sculptural elements, and well‑kept lawns that make the space ideal for slow walks or reading outdoors. A charming footbridge connects the park to the nearby Šimkovy sady, creating a continuous green corridor along the river. Benches placed near the water offer some of the best views of the city’s historic skyline, especially the White Tower and the Cathedral of the Holy Spirit. The park also features small monuments and decorative stonework that reflect the artistic spirit of the early 1900s. Seasonal flowerbeds add colour throughout the year, while mature trees provide shade and a sense of calm just steps from the city centre.

Jirásek Gardens
Location

Jirásek Gardens is the oldest park in Hradec Králové, lying at the confluence of the Elbe and Orlice rivers, just a short walk from the historic centre. Shaped like a green triangle between the two waterways, it offers lawns, mature trees and riverside paths, as well as views over the meeting of the rivers, marked by a sculptural artwork and a monument to writer Alois Jirásek. Within the park you will find the wooden Church of St. Nicholas, transferred here from eastern Slovakia and now one of the city’s most distinctive landmarks. There are also remains of former military fortifications and a historic gate, which recall Hradec Králové’s past as a fortress city. From the gardens, pleasant walks along the embankments lead back towards the East Bohemian Museum and the Hučák hydroelectric power plant, or into the old town with the White Tower, Cathedral of the Holy Spirit and main square, making the park an ideal green stop on a wider city route.
