Matej's house

About

Matej’s House in Banská Bystrica is one of the city’s most distinctive historical buildings, standing on the main square as a reminder of medieval urban life. Dating back to the 15th century, it is named after Matej Korvín (Matthias Corvinus), the Hungarian king who is believed to have stayed here during his visits. Its Gothic foundations, later adapted with Renaissance elements, make it a rare architectural blend. Inside, the house reveals preserved vaulted rooms, stone portals, and wooden ceilings that reflect the lifestyle of wealthy burghers. One of the most interesting features is the Gothic hall, where fragments of wall paintings and original structural details show the building’s long evolution. Exhibitions often present the history of Banská Bystrica’s trade, mining, and crafts, using authentic objects found in the region. The house also hosts cultural events, small displays, and thematic presentations that change throughout the year, giving each visit a slightly different character. Its intimate scale and well‑preserved interior make Matej’s House one of the most atmospheric historical stops in the city.
