The Cathedral of Saint Francis Xavier is the spiritual heart of Banská Bystrica and one of Slovakia’s finest Baroque churches. Built by the Jesuits between 1702 and 1715, it was inspired by the Church of the Gesù in Rome, giving it an unmistakably grand, theatrical character unusual for the region. Its twin‑tower façade dominates the main square, symbolising the city’s post‑Reformation revival. Inside, the cathedral impresses with a richly decorated Baroque nave, filled with stucco ornamentation, gilded details, and expressive altar sculptures. The main altar, dedicated to Saint Francis Xavier, is one of the most striking features: a dynamic composition of statues and painted scenes celebrating the missionary saint. Several side altars honour Jesuit saints and patrons, each with high‑quality Central European Baroque paintings. The cathedral also preserves a beautifully carved pulpit, an elegant organ loft, and fragments of earlier decorative layers that reveal its evolving artistic history. Soft natural light entering through tall windows enhances the warm, devotional atmosphere.
