The Museum of the Slovak National Uprising in Banská Bystrica is one of Slovakia’s most important historical institutions, dedicated to the 1944 anti‑Nazi resistance movement. The Museum of the Slovak National Uprising is located at Kapitulská 23 in Banská Bystrica, central Slovakia, on the south-western edge of the historical city center near the main square. The museum sits in the middle of a park that includes an open-air museum of heavy military equipment used in the Slovak National Uprising. Near the museum, visitors can explore several key attractions. The Slovak National Uprising Square (Námestie SNP), also known as SNP Square, is the historic main square in the heart of the city, named after the significant WWII uprising. Banská Bystrica Castle, a medieval fortress built in the 13th century that served as a royal residence and cultural center, is nearby. Marian Square (Marianské námestie) offers a charming atmosphere, and the Church of St. Francis Xavier, a stunning 17th-century Baroque church, is in the city center. The Central Slovak Museum, established in 1889 and one of the region's oldest museums, is also worth visiting. Thuro's House, a magnificent 15th-century Gothic building, and Zvolen Castle, a 14th-century medieval fortress, are additional attractions in the area.
