Kepes György International Art Center

About

Kepes György International Art Center is one of Eger’s most innovative cultural spaces, dedicated to the visionary artist, designer, and light‑art pioneer György Kepes. As a close collaborator of László Moholy‑Nagy and a key figure at MIT, Kepes shaped the global dialogue between art, science, and technology — a legacy the center brings to life with striking clarity. Inside, the permanent exhibition showcases Kepes’s experiments with light, motion, and perception. His luminous panels, kinetic compositions, and photographic works reveal how he blurred the boundaries between artistic intuition and scientific inquiry. Interactive installations allow visitors to explore optical illusions, transparency effects, and the role of light as a creative medium. A highlight is the section devoted to the New Bauhaus movement, where Kepes’s connections to Chicago and the international avant‑garde are presented through rare documents, models, and multimedia displays. Temporary exhibitions broaden the experience with contemporary artists who continue Kepes’s interdisciplinary spirit. The building itself enhances the visit: clean lines, open spaces, and controlled lighting create an atmosphere that mirrors Kepes’s aesthetic world. It’s a museum where art becomes an experiment and curiosity is part of the design.

Location

The György Kepes International Art Center (also called Kepes Intézet or Kepes Központ) is located at number 16 on Széchenyi István utca in the old town of Eger, in the city’s historic center. It is a modern and contemporary art center that houses the estate and work of the world-famous Hungarian-born American artist and theorist György Kepes (1906–2001), with interactive displays showing his art and philosophy. Because it sits in Eger’s compact old town, many important attractions are nearby. Directly east of the center is the famous Eger Basilica, one of Hungary’s largest churches, and the historic Zopf-style Lyceum with its Astronomy Museum and Camera Obscura on the sixth floor. The Eger Castle, with its István Dóbo Museum and underground casemates, is also very close, along with the historic Minaret and Dobó István Square, the main public square of the city. The Ecclesiastical Collection in the Eger Archbishop’s Palace and the Fine Art Collection from Eger Castle, featuring works by Canaletto and Ceruti, are also just a short walk away.
