Serbian Orthodox Church of St. Nicholas

About

The Serbian Orthodox Church of St. Nicholas is one of Eger’s lesser‑known but most atmospheric sacred sites, reflecting the presence of the city’s once‑vibrant Serbian merchant community. Built in the 18th century, the church stands out with its restrained Baroque exterior, which contrasts beautifully with the richness waiting inside. The interior is dominated by a magnificent iconostasis, a multi‑tiered wall of icons separating the nave from the sanctuary. Carved from dark wood and gilded with delicate ornamentation, it features vivid icons of Christ, the Virgin Mary, and numerous saints painted in the traditional Orthodox style. The colours, gold accents, and expressive faces create a sense of spiritual intimacy. Visitors can also admire the frescoes and wall paintings that soften the space with warm tones and subtle storytelling. The church’s liturgical objects — chalices, crosses, and embroidered vestments — highlight the craftsmanship of the Serbian community that once flourished in Eger. Though modest in size, the church offers a serene, contemplative atmosphere. Its blend of Baroque architecture and Orthodox artistic tradition makes it a unique cultural layer within the city’s diverse religious heritage.

Location

The Serbian Orthodox Church of St. Nicholas (also called the Serbian Church or Greek Orthodox Serbian Church) is located on a hill next to the historic city center of Eger in Northern Hungary, in the area known as Rác hóstya (west from Upper Town). The church was built in Zopf style between 1784–86 and completed in 1799. Today the church is no longer in regular use and serves as a museum, offering visitors a unique experience that is very different from the Catholic churches in town. Nearby attractions include the Eger Castle, which hovers above the city and is just a short walk uphill, featuring several museums and excellent views over the town. The Cathedral Basilica of St. John the Apostle and the historic Zopf-style Lyceum with its Camera Obscura are also within easy walking distance in the compact old town. Dobo Istvan Square, the main square of Eger with cafés and the Minorite Church of St. Anthony of Padua, is nearby. The famous Szépasszonyvölgy (Valley of the Beautiful Woman) with its numerous wine cellars offering legendary Egri Bikavér wines is a couple of kilometers south of the city, and the Eger Minaret, the northernmost Turkish minaret in Europe, is also close by.
