Cathedral Basilica of St. John the Apostle

About

The Cathedral Basilica of St. John the Apostle is Eger’s grandest sacred building, a monumental 19th‑century creation designed by József Hild, one of Hungary’s leading classicist architects. Completed in 1837, it stands as the second‑largest church in the country, instantly recognisable by its broad staircase, Corinthian columns, and twin bell towers framing a powerful neoclassical façade. Inside, the basilica impresses with its vast dome, rising nearly 40 metres above the nave. Light filters through high windows, illuminating richly decorated altars, frescoes, and sculptural details. The main altar, dedicated to St. John the Apostle, features elegant marble work and a commanding altarpiece that draws the eye toward the sanctuary. One of the most interesting features is the organ, among the largest in Hungary, known for its deep, resonant sound during concerts and liturgical events. Visitors can also admire the side chapels, each with distinct artistic themes, and the statues of the four evangelists guarding the entrance. The crypt beneath the basilica adds another layer of history, serving as the burial place of bishops and archbishops of Eger. The cathedral’s scale, harmony, and artistic richness make it a centrepiece of the city’s spiritual and architectural heritage.

Location

The Cathedral Basilica of St. John the Apostle, also called Eger Cathedral or the Basilica of Eger, is located at Pyrker János tér 1 in the heart of the city of Eger in Northern Hungary. It is the second largest religious building in Hungary and stands on a small hill in the city center, facing the Eszterházy Károly University. Directly east of the Basilica is the historic Zopf-style Lyceum (1765), which houses the Archdiocesian Library, Observatory, and Camera Obscura, the oldest "panorama projector" on the continent. Opposite the Basilica is the Eszterházy Károly University building, part of the impressive Eszterházy Square bordered by the Basilica, Archbishop's Palace, and Lyceum. Nearby attractions include the Minorite Church, the highest Baroque church in Eger on Dobó Square; the historic Eger Castle with its underground casemates and István Dóbo Museum; the Eger Minaret, Hungary's best-preserved Ottoman monument; and the Marzipan Museum at the bottom of the Minaret. The famous Szépasszony-völgy (Valley of the Beautiful Woman) with its wine cellars is also a short distance away, where visitors can taste the legendary Egri Bikavér wines. Dobó István Square, the main square of Eger, is just a few minutes walk from the Basilica.
