Archbishop’s Garden is Eger’s oldest public park and one of its most charming green retreats, created in the 18th century as part of the archbishop’s estate. Once a private pleasure garden, it later opened to the public and became a favourite promenade for locals. Its layout still reflects Baroque garden principles, with long sightlines, symmetrical paths, and carefully framed views. At the heart of the park lies the ornamental lake, crossed by a small bridge that has become one of Eger’s most photographed spots. The surrounding lawns and tree‑lined avenues offer a peaceful escape, especially in spring and summer when the garden is filled with colour. Scattered statues and historic stone elements hint at its aristocratic origins. Visitors can also explore the old music pavilion, a reminder of the garden’s role as a social venue where concerts once entertained the city’s elite. Today, families, joggers, and students share the space, giving it a relaxed, lived‑in atmosphere.
Eger Hungary
Archbishop's Garden (Hungarian: Érsekkert) is the largest park in Eger, Hungary, covering about 12 hectares and located next to the Eger Thermal Bath in the city. For a long time it was the archbishop's private estate and was only opened to the public in 1919 under pressure from the city council. Locals call it "the lungs of the town" because of its size and importance as a green space. Nearby attractions include the Eger Thermal Bath, which is directly next to the park and offers 13 pools for a relaxing experience. The Eger Castle, one of the most popular museums in Hungary and the main symbol of Eger, is just a short walk away. The Cathedral Basilica of Eger, the second largest religious building in Hungary with its 40-meter dome, is also close by. The historic Eger Lyceum with its Archdiocesan Library and Camera Obscura is nearby, as is the famous Eger Minaret, the best-preserved Ottoman monument in Hungary. The Valley of the Beautiful Woman (Szépasszony-völgy), the number one place for wine tasting in Eger with its legendary Egri Bikavér wines, is also accessible from the park area.
