The Minorite Church of St. Anthony of Padua is one of Eger’s most elegant Baroque landmarks, often praised as one of the finest Baroque churches in Hungary. Completed in 1773 under the guidance of Kilian Ignaz Dientzenhofer, a master of the Central European Baroque, the church stands out with its graceful twin towers and richly sculpted façade that immediately draws the eye from Dobó Square. Inside, the atmosphere is warm and theatrical. The high altar, dedicated to St. Anthony of Padua, is a masterpiece of Baroque illusionism, combining sculpture, painting, and gilded ornament to create a sense of depth and movement. The side altars continue this visual richness, each dedicated to a different saint and framed by swirling columns and expressive figures. One of the most interesting features is the ceiling fresco cycle, which fills the nave with soft colour and dynamic storytelling. The interplay of painted architecture and real space creates the impression of an opening sky. The church’s acoustics are also remarkable, making it a popular venue for organ and choral concerts.
Eger Hungary
The Minorite Church of St. Anthony of Padua is located at Dobó István tér 4 (also listed as number 6) on the southern side of Dobó István Square, the main square of Eger in Northern Hungary. It is one of the most beautiful Baroque churches in Hungary and the defining building of the square. Directly on the western side of the church is the Eger Town Hall, and on the eastern side stands Saint Hedvig Secondary Girl Hostel (the former Minorite friary from 1773–75). Dobó Square is dominated by the monument of István Dobó, the heroic captain of the castle. Nearby attractions include the Eger Castle, which hovers above the square and features several small museums including a history museum, archery exhibit, dungeon, and waxworks. The indoor market on the square offers a taste of local life, and the legendary Eger cellar system is just a short walk away. The Eger Minaret, the Basilica of St. John the Apostle, and the historic Lyceum with its Camera Obscura are also within easy walking distance in the compact old town. The famous Szépasszony-völgy (Valley of the Beautiful Woman) with its 300+ wine cellars is southwest of the city, offering wine tastings of the legendary Egri Bikavér.
