The Eger Archiepiscopal Palace is one of the city’s most refined architectural treasures, reflecting centuries of ecclesiastical power and artistic patronage. Originally shaped in the Baroque period and later enriched with Classicist elements, the palace served as the residence of Eger’s archbishops, who played a major role in Hungary’s cultural and political life. Inside, the most captivating spaces are the ceremonial halls, decorated with frescoes, stucco work, and richly carved furnishings. The Red Salon stands out with its deep colours and elegant portraits, while the Grand Hall impresses with its ceiling paintings celebrating faith, learning, and the arts. These rooms offer a vivid glimpse into the lifestyle of the high clergy. The palace museum presents liturgical treasures, including chalices, vestments, and reliquaries that showcase exceptional craftsmanship. Visitors can also explore exhibitions on the history of the archdiocese, featuring documents, maps, and objects that trace Eger’s spiritual influence.
Eger Hungary
The Eger Archiepiscopal Palace (also called the Archbishop's Palace) is located at Széchenyi István utca 3 in the heart of Eger, next to the Basilica with its impressive wrought-iron gate overlooking Széchenyi Street, one of the busiest areas of the city. It is one of the most beautiful and valuable architectural monuments in the city center. The Cathedral Basilica of Eger, Hungary's second largest church with its impressive 40-meter dome, is directly next to the palace. The historic Zopf-style Lyceum (1765), now headquarters of the Károly Eszterházy University of Applied Sciences, is directly east of the Basilica and contains the Archdiocesan Library, Observatory, and Camera Obscura. The Eger Castle, the most valuable and grandest monument of Eger that basically dominates the town view, is just a short walk away. Nearby attractions include the famous Eger Minaret, the only minaret in the world with a cross on top and the northernmost Ottoman minaret in Europe. Dobó square, the main square of the town with statues of István Dobó and his comrades-in-arms, is also close by. The Eger Thermal Bath, one of the nicest town baths in the country with 13 pools, is within walking distance. The Valley of the Beautiful Woman (Szépasszony-valley), the number one place for wine tasting in Eger, is also easily accessible from the palace.
