Astronomical Museum and Camera Obscura

About

The Astronomical Museum and Camera Obscura in Eger is one of Hungary’s most intriguing scientific attractions, housed in the historic Lyceum building. Its star feature is the 18th‑century camera obscura—one of the oldest still‑operational periscope systems in Europe. Designed by physicist Sámuel Mikoviny, it uses mirrors and lenses to project a live, moving image of the city onto a white table in a darkened room. Watching people walk, clouds drift, and rooftops shift in real time feels almost magical, a reminder of how early optics brought the world into focus long before photography. Inside the museum, visitors can explore a rich collection of astronomical instruments, including antique telescopes, celestial globes, and scientific devices once used for teaching at the Lyceum. Exhibits explain how astronomy developed in Hungary and how scholars here contributed to mapping the heavens. One interesting fact is that the Lyceum once aimed to become a major Central European observatory, and its tower still reflects that ambition.
