János Xántus Museum

About

The János Xántus Museum in Győr is one of western Hungary’s most engaging cultural institutions, housed in the elegant Baroque Apátúr House on Széchenyi Square. Named after the 19th‑century zoologist and world traveller János Xántus, the museum reflects his spirit of curiosity through collections that span archaeology, ethnography, fine arts, and local history. One of the most interesting facts is that Xántus himself sent artefacts from his expeditions in North America and Asia, some of which are still part of the museum’s holdings. These pieces highlight the global reach of a scientist who began his career in Hungary and became a respected naturalist abroad. Inside, visitors can explore Roman‑era finds from ancient Arrabona, including pottery, jewellery, and everyday objects that reveal the city’s early past. The ethnographic section presents traditional Hungarian folk costumes, tools, and household items, offering a vivid picture of rural life in the region. The fine art collection includes works by prominent Hungarian painters, while temporary exhibitions bring fresh perspectives on contemporary themes. The building itself is worth attention: its ornate façade, inner courtyard, and historic interiors create a refined backdrop for the displays.
