The Püspökvár‑Toronykilátó is one of Győr’s most striking viewpoints, rising above the Bishop’s Castle complex and offering a rare blend of history and panorama. The tower, part of the centuries‑old episcopal residence, reflects the layered architectural past of the city — from medieval fortifications to Baroque refinement shaped by powerful bishops who governed both spiritual and cultural life. Climbing the tower is the highlight. As you ascend the narrow staircase, you pass thick stone walls that once formed part of Győr’s defensive system. At the top, the open‑air terrace rewards visitors with one of the finest views in western Hungary: the meeting point of the Moson‑Danube and Rába rivers, the rooftops of the old town, and the domes and towers that define Győr’s skyline. Inside the adjoining sections of the castle, small exhibitions introduce the history of the episcopal seat, including portraits, documents, and architectural fragments. The Püspökvár-Toronykilátó (Bishop's Castle Tower Lookout) is located at Káptalandomb 13 on Káptalandomb (Cathedral Hill), one of the oldest parts of Győr, in the historic center of the city. The tower is part of the Bishop's Castle complex, which was founded by King Stephen I and is still the seat of the Győr bishopric. Nearby attractions include the Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption of Our Lady, a grand Baroque church on Káptalan Hill with architectural styles ranging from 11th-century foundations to Romanesque apses, a Gothic chapel, and a neoclassical exterior, including the famous Weeping Icon of Mary. The Győr Benedictine Church (Benedictine Church of St. Martin), modeled after Rome's Church of the Gesù and the first church built by the Jesuits after they settled in Győr in 1627, is also very close. Other nearby sights include the historic Gyor Town Hall, inaugurated in 1900, the beautiful Széchenyi Square with its restored Baroque buildings, and the Elegant Esterházy Palace. The National Theatre of Győr, the Zichy Palace, and the Arc of the Covenant are all within walking distance in the compact old town, making it an ideal spot for a walking tour of Győr's main landmarks. The János Xánthus Museum, Győr's main museum, and the House of the Iron Butt are also accessible from Káptalandomb.
