Várkazamata – Kőtár

About

Várkazamata – Kőtár is one of Győr’s most atmospheric historical sites, hidden beneath the former castle district. These underground casemates once formed part of the city’s defensive system, protecting soldiers and storing supplies during sieges. Today, the vaulted stone corridors house the Kőtár, an evocative lapidarium that brings centuries of local history into focus. Inside, visitors can explore an impressive collection of carved stones, architectural fragments, and medieval reliefs uncovered during excavations around Győr. Roman‑era tombstones and inscriptions reveal the city’s ancient roots as Arrabona, while Gothic and Baroque elements illustrate how Győr evolved through turbulent centuries of warfare and reconstruction. One of the most interesting features is the way the exhibition uses the original casemate structure. The cool, dimly lit chambers create a dramatic backdrop for the sculptures, enhancing their textures and details. Many pieces show traces of their original placement on churches, fortifications, or public buildings, offering clues to the city’s lost architectural landscape.
