Radó Island

About

Radó Island is one of Győr’s most relaxing and picturesque urban spaces, a green oasis formed by the branches of the Moson‑Danube. Long used as a riverside meadow, it was transformed in the 19th century into a landscaped park, becoming a favourite promenade for locals. Its gently curving paths, old trees, and riverside views make it an ideal place to slow down and enjoy the city’s quieter side. One of the island’s most charming features is the network of small bridges connecting it to the historic centre. These crossings offer beautiful perspectives of Győr’s skyline, especially the cathedral towers rising above the water. The island is also home to the Radó Playground and open lawns, making it a popular spot for families and picnics. Visitors will find sculptures and memorials scattered throughout the park, adding cultural layers to the natural setting. Seasonal events, from open‑air concerts to community gatherings, often take place here, giving the island a lively yet relaxed atmosphere.

Location

Radó Island is a charming, green island located in the heart of Győr, between the two branches of the Rába river, close to the city center, Újváros, and Sziget districts. It is a 19,512 m² artificial island, surrounded by the Rába river and connected to downtown and Újváros by the Rába double bridge, which cuts the island in half from east to west. Nearby attractions include the Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption of Our Lady on Káptalandomb, the seat of the episcopate founded by Stephen I and rebuilt in Gothic and Baroque styles, just a short walk away. The historic Gyor Town Hall, one of the city's most beautiful Neo-Baroque symbols with more than 200 rooms, is also close by. The National Theatre of Győr in the downtown area, with its famous ceramics by Victor Vasarely on the northern and southern walls, is within walking distance. The elegant Esterházy Palace, the Benedictine Church Saint Ignatius of Loyola, Hungary's oldest Baroque church, and the late Historicist and Secession style synagogue, now functioning as a cultural centre, are all nearby. The recently updated Dunakapu Square along the riverbank serves as a gathering place, and from here visitors can walk across the Kossuth Bridge to enjoy views of the city's waterways. For a complete sightseeing day, Radó Island fits well into a route through Győr's compact old town, where museums, churches, and squares are close together.
