Tailors’ Tower is one of Sighișoara Citadel’s most impressive defensive structures, guarding the southern entrance with a commanding, almost sculptural presence. Built in the 14th century and later expanded, it was maintained by the Tailors’ Guild, whose members were responsible for defending this vital gateway. Its unusual shape—wide at the base and narrowing toward the top—was designed to absorb cannon fire and prevent collapse, a clever medieval engineering detail often overlooked by visitors. Inside, the tower reveals its military past through thick walls, narrow passages, and openings once used for archers and early firearms. The vaulted ground floor is particularly striking: it served as a storage space for weapons and textiles, a reminder that guilds combined craftsmanship with civic duty. Higher levels offer glimpses of the original timber structure and the tower’s defensive chambers. One of the most interesting facts is that Tailors’ Tower was partially destroyed in the great fire of 1676, then rebuilt with stronger fortifications. Today, its interior hosts small exhibitions and seasonal displays, often featuring local artisans who continue the guild tradition in modern form.

The Tailors’ Tower, known locally as Turnul Croitorilor, stands in the western wall of Sighișoara’s medieval citadel and guards one of the main entry gates to the old town. Built in the 14th century and rebuilt after a 1676 gunpowder explosion, it is the largest and most imposing of the nine surviving guild towers. Its massive square form, twin arched passageways, and simple Romanesque design reflect its defensive role. You are already within the UNESCO-listed Historic Centre, so the best of Sighișoara is steps away. Right inside the citadel walls you’ll find the Clock Tower and History Museum, the Church of the Dominican Monastery, and Vlad Dracul House, birthplace of Vlad the Impaler. A short walk leads to Citadel Square, with its colorful burgher houses, cafes, and craft shops. Nearby towers include the Furriers’ Tower, Butchers’ Tower, Shoemakers’ Tower, and Rope-makers’ Tower, each built by a different guild. Climb the Covered Staircase, a 17th-century wooden passage, to reach the School Hill, the Church on the Hill with Gothic frescoes, and the Saxon cemetery with views over the Târnava valley. Other sights within the cobbled streets are the House with the Deer Antler, the Venetian House, the Medieval Weapon Museum, and the Torture Museum.
