Holy Trinity Orthodox Church is Sighișoara’s most graceful riverside landmark, rising with white walls and elegant domes along the Târnava Mare. Built between 1934 and 1937, it was designed by architect Dumitru Petrescu in a Neo‑Byzantine style that contrasts beautifully with the medieval citadel across the water. Its placement was intentional: the church was meant to balance the skyline and signal the growing Romanian community of the early 20th century. Inside, the church feels luminous and spacious. The iconostasis is its most striking feature, carved from linden wood and richly gilded, displaying icons painted in a warm, traditional style. The frescoes, completed in the mid‑20th century, wrap the interior in soft colours and detailed biblical scenes; look for the depiction of the Holy Trinity above the altar, considered one of the church’s finest works. An interesting fact is the church’s acoustics. The central dome creates a natural resonance that enhances choral music, making liturgical chants sound almost ethereal. The marble floor, arranged in geometric patterns, adds a subtle elegance that visitors often notice only on a second glance.

The Holy Trinity Orthodox Church, also called Biserica Sfânta Treime, stands on Strada Andrei Șaguna on the northern bank of the Târnava Mare River, just outside Sighișoara’s medieval citadel. Built between 1934 and 1937 in Neo-Byzantine style to the plans of architect Dumitru Petrescu Gopeș, it was consecrated in 1937 and remains the seat of the local archpriest. Though outside the citadel walls, the church is only a short walk from the historic center. Cross the river and you’re quickly at the main gate of Sighișoara Citadel, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. From there explore the Clock Tower and History Museum, Vlad Dracul House, the Monastery Church, and the colorful burgher houses around Piața Cetății. Climb the Covered Staircase to reach the Church on the Hill, with its Gothic frescoes and adjacent Saxon cemetery. The Tailors’ Tower, Butchers’ Tower, and other medieval guild towers are scattered along the cobbled streets. Also nearby are the Torture Museum, Medieval Weapon Museum, Venetian House, and the House with the Deer Antler. Cafes, restaurants, and artisan shops fill the Lower Town around the church, and Hermann Oberth Square offers another open space to wander.
