The Tinsmiths’ Tower is one of Sighișoara’s most distinctive fortifications, rising above the citadel with an elegant, almost playful silhouette. Unlike the heavier defensive towers, this one reflects the craftsmanship of the Tinsmiths’ Guild, whose members maintained it for centuries. Its unusual shape—tall, narrow, and crowned with a pointed roof—was designed to give defenders a clear view over the valley while keeping the structure light enough to adapt to the steep terrain. Inside, the tower reveals a layered history. The lower rooms once stored tools, metal sheets, and finished goods, showing how guild life blended craft and defense. Narrow stairways lead to upper levels where embrasures open toward the surrounding hills. These small windows were used both for surveillance and for early firearms, marking the tower’s transition from medieval to early modern military design. One of the most interesting facts is that the Tinsmiths’ Tower was connected to the old defensive wall through a passage that allowed quick movement between fortifications. Today, its interior often hosts small exhibitions, including displays of traditional tinsmithing techniques—delicate repoussé work, decorative household items, and examples of the guild’s emblematic motifs.

The Tinsmiths’ Tower, or Turnul Cositorarilor, rises on Stradela Cetății inside Sighișoara’s medieval citadel. Built in the 14th century and rebuilt in 1583, it is one of nine surviving guild towers that once defended the fortified town. Standing 25 meters tall, it has the citadel’s most distinctive silhouette: a square base, then a pentagonal body that suddenly widens into an octagon, topped with a slightly tilted hexagonal roof. With its strategic position beside the Clock Tower, it helped guard the main approach to the citadel and the bastion that remains well preserved at its foot. You’re in the heart of the UNESCO-listed Historic Centre, so everything is walkable. Just steps away is the Clock Tower, home to the History Museum and offering 360-degree views over the red-tiled roofs. Around Piața Cetății you’ll find Vlad Dracul House, the alleged birthplace of Vlad the Impaler, the Monastery Church with its Gothic-Baroque mix, and the Ironsmiths’ Tower behind it. Other nearby towers include the Tailors’ Tower, Butchers’ Tower, Furriers’ Tower, Ropemakers’ Tower, and Shoemakers’ Tower, each built and maintained by a different guild. Climb the Covered Staircase to reach the Church on the Hill, its medieval frescoes, and the Saxon cemetery with panoramic valley views. Also close are the Medieval Weapon Museum, Torture Museum, Venetian House, and House with the Deer Antler.
