Turnul Cizmarilor

About

Turnul Cizmarilor, the Shoemakers’ Tower, is one of Sighișoara’s most charming and strategically placed fortifications. Standing near the citadel’s eastern side, it guarded a quieter but important access route, reflecting the Shoemakers’ Guild’s responsibility for both craftsmanship and defense. Its current form dates mainly to the 16th century, after several reconstructions that adapted the tower to new military needs. Inside, the tower feels compact and purposeful. The lower level once stored leather goods, tools, and guild records, showing how everyday craft life intertwined with the citadel’s protection. As you climb the narrow wooden stairs, you reach the upper chamber where defenders once kept watch. Small embrasures pierce the thick walls, offering views toward the valley and allowing archers or early firearm users to control the approach. One of the most interesting facts is the tower’s connection to the nearby bastion. Together they formed a layered defensive system, enabling quick movement between positions during attacks. Today, the interior often hosts small exhibitions, including displays of traditional shoemaking tools—awls, wooden lasts, and decorative patterns that echo the guild’s heritage.

Location

Turnul Cizmarilor, also called the Bootmakers’ Tower, stands along Strada Zidul Cetății in the northeastern wall of Sighișoara’s medieval citadel. Built in 1681 to replace an older 1522 tower destroyed by a gunpowder explosion during the 1676 fire, it was maintained by the Bootmakers’ Guild, one of the town’s important craftsmen associations. The pentagonal tower features a distinctive Baroque cap-shaped roof with two elegant observation turrets facing southeast and northwest. A short walk brings you to the Clock Tower and History Museum, the main gate and panoramic viewpoint of the citadel. Nearby, Piața Cetății is lined with colorful 16th-century burgher houses, cafes, and artisan shops. Just steps away are Vlad Dracul House, the alleged birthplace of Vlad the Impaler, the Monastery Church with its Gothic-Baroque interior, and the Tinsmiths’ Tower, known for its unique octagonal shape. Other guild towers close by include the Tailors’ Tower, Butchers’ Tower, Ropemakers’ Tower, and Furriers’ Tower, each telling part of the citadel’s defensive story. Follow the cobbled streets to the Covered Staircase, a 164-step wooden passage leading to the Church on the Hill, with 15th-century frescoes and the Saxon cemetery overlooking the Târnava valley. Also nearby are the Medieval Weapon Museum, Torture Museum, Venetian House, and House with the Deer Antler.
