Petrovaradin Fortress dominates the Danube with a scale and precision unmatched in the region, earning its nickname “Gibraltar of the Danube.” Built mainly in the 18th century by the Habsburgs, it was engineered as a massive defensive system capable of withstanding long sieges. One of its most interesting facts is the labyrinth of underground corridors—over 16 kilometres of tunnels designed for troop movement, storage, and strategic surprise. Many sections are still accessible today, offering a rare glimpse into military engineering at its peak. Above ground, the fortress unfolds as a self‑contained town. Visitors enter through monumental gates and reach the Upper Fortress, where the iconic Clock Tower stands. Its reversed hands—large hand for hours, small for minutes—were designed so fishermen on the river could read the time from afar. The panoramic view from this terrace is one of Novi Sad’s defining sights. Inside the complex, you can explore barracks, officers’ quarters, and vaulted halls that now host galleries, cafés, and studios. The Museum of Novi Sad occupies part of the fortress, presenting archaeological finds and historical artefacts that trace the city’s past.

Petrovaradin Fortress is one of Serbia's most iconic historic landmarks, spectacularly situated on a high rocky cliff over the Danube River in Novi Sad, with the general address at Tvrđava 1 in Petrovaradin. Known as the Gibraltar on the Danube, this massive 18th-century stronghold features impressive bastions, a famous reversed clock tower, and sweeping panoramic views across the river and the city skyline. Inside the fortress complex itself, you will find several major attractions without even leaving the site. The main building of the City Museum of Novi Sad is located right on the grounds, offering fascinating historical exhibits and guided tours through the complex network of underground military galleries. Also on the fortress grounds is the planetarium and the unique Space Museum, which showcases astronomy and space exploration exhibits. At the foot of the hill lies the historic Lower Town of Petrovaradin, a charming district filled with Baroque architecture, quaint streets, and the historic Church of Saint George. Crossing the nearby Varadin Bridge takes you straight into the central pedestrian heart of Novi Sad. Just across the river, you can stroll through the lush green paths of Danube Park or visit the nearby Museum of Vojvodina, the Museum of Contemporary Art of Vojvodina, and the Foreign Art Collection on Dunavska Street.
