Cathedral of Saint George is the spiritual heart of Novi Sad’s Serbian Orthodox community, rising elegantly on Zmaj Jovina Street. Built in the mid‑18th century and later expanded, it stands on the site of an older church destroyed during the 1849 bombardment. One of its most interesting facts is that the cathedral’s reconstruction symbolised the city’s cultural revival, blending Baroque influences with traditional Orthodox forms. Inside, visitors are greeted by a luminous nave and the cathedral’s most celebrated feature: its monumental iconostasis carved by Aksentije Marković and painted by famed artist Pavle Simić. The icons display vivid colours and refined detail, illustrating scenes from the life of Christ and major saints. The interior walls hold additional frescoes that enrich the sacred atmosphere. The cathedral also preserves valuable liturgical treasures, including chalices, embroidered vestments, and rare books that reflect centuries of religious tradition. Its acoustics make it a remarkable venue for choral performances, especially during major feast days.

The Cathedral of Saint George is the principal Serbian Orthodox church in Novi Sad, conveniently located in the city center at Nikole Pašića 4. Originally built in the 18th century and beautifully renovated in a striking Neo-Baroque style at the turn of the 20th century, this historic cathedral features a grand bell tower, stunning stained-glass windows, and a magnificent iconostasis crafted by famous Serbian artists. Right next to the cathedral stands the Bishop's Palace, an impressive residence known for its unique red-brick facade and Serbo-Byzantine architectural details. Stepping away from the church grounds places you right at the entrance of the lively Dunavska Street pedestrian zone. Following Dunavska Street leads you directly to a cluster of major cultural institutions, including the Museum of Vojvodina, the Museum of Contemporary Art of Vojvodina, and the Foreign Art Collection branch of the City Museum. Nearby, you can also take a relaxing stroll through Danube Park, a scenic green retreat with a lovely central pond. Walking in the opposite direction along Zmaj Jovina Street quickly brings you to Liberty Square, the main town square surrounded by historic landmarks like the neo-Gothic Name of Mary Church and the elegant City Hall.
