Church of the Name of Mary is Novi Sad’s most iconic Catholic landmark, rising above Liberty Square with its soaring Neo‑Gothic spire. Completed in 1895 after the previous church was destroyed in the 1849 bombardment, it became a symbol of the city’s renewal. One of its most interesting facts is that the church is not officially a cathedral, despite its grand scale—its title reflects dedication rather than rank. Inside, the atmosphere shifts from the lively square to a calm, luminous interior. The tall nave is lined with slender columns and pointed arches that draw the eye upward, emphasising verticality typical of Gothic revival design. The main highlight is the richly decorated altar, featuring carved details and vibrant colours that contrast with the church’s pale stone walls. Visitors also notice the stained‑glass windows, imported from Hungary, which depict scenes from the life of the Virgin Mary. When sunlight passes through them, the interior fills with warm hues that shift throughout the day. The side chapels contain statues of saints, devotional paintings, and small altars used for private prayer.

The Church of the Name of Mary, often locally called the Cathedral, is the most prominent landmark in the heart of Novi Sad, located at Trg Slobode 2. Rising high over the main town square, this striking Neo-Gothic Roman Catholic church was built in the late 19th century and features a soaring spired bell tower decorated with colorful Zsolnay ceramic roof tiles and stunning stained-glass windows inside. Sitting directly on Liberty Square, the church puts you at the center of the city's lively cultural scene. Right across the square stands the historic City Hall, an elegant Neo-Renaissance building, along with charming outdoor cafes and historic townhouses. A brief stroll down Zmaj Jovina Street leads you toward the Bishop's Palace and Saint George's Cathedral. Continuing along Dunavska Street brings you to a cluster of major museums, including the Museum of Vojvodina, the Museum of Contemporary Art of Vojvodina, and the Foreign Art Collection. Right next to these museums lies Danube Park, a scenic green space with quiet walking paths and a central pond, perfect for taking a relaxing break. Heading west from the square brings you quickly to Gallery Square, home to notable art spots like the Gallery of Matica Srpska and The Pavle Beljanski Memorial Collection.
