Vršac Castle

Vršac Castle is the town’s most iconic landmark, rising above the Banat plain with a commanding view that has defined the region for centuries. Built in the mid‑15th century, likely under the rule of Despot Đurađ Branković, it served as a defensive outpost during turbulent years marked by Ottoman expansion. Its distinctive triangular tower—rare in Serbian medieval architecture—is one of the most interesting features, giving the fortress a recognizable silhouette visible from miles away. Inside the preserved tower, visitors can explore a compact exhibition space that presents archaeological finds from the site: fragments of medieval pottery, weaponry and everyday tools that reveal how soldiers lived in this remote stronghold. Narrow stone stairways lead to upper levels where openings in the thick walls frame dramatic views of the Pannonian landscape. The interior’s simplicity highlights the fortress’s original purpose: endurance, vigilance and strategic control. Walking around the outer ramparts, you can still trace the outlines of the former defensive walls and imagine the castle’s full scale before later destruction. Its hilltop position makes it a favorite viewpoint for photographers and hikers.
