Gradski park

Gradski Park in Vršac is one of the town’s most beloved green spaces, a landscaped oasis created in the late 19th century when Vršac was transforming into a modern Central European town. Its design reflects the era’s taste for orderly promenades, decorative flowerbeds and carefully arranged tree alleys, giving the park a refined, almost Viennese character. Many of the oldest trees—towering chestnuts, lindens and plane trees—were planted more than a century ago and now form a natural canopy over the winding paths. At the heart of the park stands a charming music pavilion, once used for weekend concerts and social gatherings. Nearby, visitors find elegant benches, small sculptures and a fountain that adds a gentle acoustic backdrop. One of the most interesting features is the monument to Jovan Sterija Popović, the celebrated playwright whose legacy shaped local culture; it anchors the park’s role as both a recreational and intellectual space. Families enjoy the playgrounds and open lawns, while walkers appreciate the shaded routes leading toward the historic center. Seasonal flower arrangements give the park a different personality throughout the year.
