Church of Our Lady of Ljeviš

About

Church of Our Lady of Ljeviš is one of Prizren’s most extraordinary monuments, a UNESCO‑listed treasure that captures the artistic brilliance and turbulent history of the Balkans. Built in the early 14th century on the foundations of an earlier Byzantine church, it became a masterpiece of the Serbian medieval era. Its exterior blends brick and stone in decorative patterns typical of the Raška style, while later Ottoman conversions added subtle architectural layers that reveal centuries of cultural overlap. Inside, the church preserves some of the finest frescoes in Kosovo. Although damaged over time, the surviving scenes—Christ Pantocrator, the Virgin Mary, and intricate cycles of saints—show remarkable detail and color. These frescoes are among the most interesting features of Ljeviš, offering a glimpse into the sophistication of medieval painters who worked with natural pigments and complex theological symbolism. Visitors can also see traces of the church’s period as a mosque, including the remains of a mihrab, which highlight Prizren’s long tradition of coexistence. The quiet courtyard, framed by old stone walls, adds to the contemplative atmosphere.
