The Church of Saint Matthew of Sinai is one of Heraklion’s most atmospheric small churches, tucked near the Venetian Walls and known for its quiet, contemplative character. Dedicated to Saint Matthew of Sinai, a monk associated with the spiritual traditions of the Sinai Peninsula, the church reflects the deep ties between Crete and Eastern monastic culture. Its origins date to the Ottoman period, when it served as a modest neighbourhood sanctuary. Inside, the church is intimate and warmly lit. The iconostasis is simple but expressive, featuring icons painted in the Cretan tradition with earthy colours and elongated figures. A notable detail is the presence of older icons preserved from previous restorations, offering a glimpse into the devotional art of earlier centuries. The church’s stone floor and thick walls create a cool, serene atmosphere ideal for reflection. One of the most interesting features is the small chapel space dedicated to Sinai saints, highlighting Crete’s historical connections with monastic centres across the Eastern Mediterranean. The Church of Saint Matthew of Sinai, also known as Agios Matthaios Sinaiton, is a historic Byzantine-era church tucked away in the old town of Heraklion, Crete. You will find this charming two-aisled church nestled along Taxiarchou Markopoulou, Iraklio 712 01. Housed inside a peaceful courtyard, it served as an important religious site during the Venetian and Ottoman eras and holds a valuable collection of Post-Byzantine icons. Its central position in the old town makes it very easy to combine with visits to other major sights. Just a short walk to the north sits the majestic Cathedral of Saint Minas, along with the smaller 18th-century Church of Saint Minas and the Museum of Christian Art housed in the historic Church of Saint Catherine of Sinai. Strolling slightly further north brings you to the lively 1866 Street Traditional Market and the historic Bembo Fountain.If you head toward the pedestrian center, you will reach Lions Square, home to the iconic 17th-century Morosini Fountain, the Venetian Loggia, and the Basilica of Saint Mark. Walking toward the city's perimeter brings you to the massive Venetian Walls, the Stoa Makasi underground passage, and the Martinengo Bastion. Heading north toward the waterfront leads straight to the seafront promenade, where you can explore the Historical Museum of Crete and the imposing Venetian Fortress of Koules guarding the old harbor.
