Church of Saint Nicholas Kavala

The Church of Saint Nicholas stands at the edge of Kavala’s old harbor, instantly recognizable by its elegant façade and the large mosaic of Saint Nicholas welcoming sailors and visitors. Although the church is modern in its current form, it occupies a site with deep historical resonance: this is where Apostle Paul is believed to have first set foot in Europe during his mission to Macedonia, a moment commemorated by a striking outdoor monument beside the church. Inside, the atmosphere is bright and maritime in spirit. The iconostasis is finely carved and features vivid icons of Saint Nicholas, the patron saint of seafarers, reflecting Kavala’s long bond with the sea. The interior decoration blends traditional Orthodox forms with contemporary artistic touches, including wall paintings that depict scenes from Paul’s journey and the life of Saint Nicholas. A notable feature is the small chapel dedicated to Apostle Paul, where visitors can see inscriptions and symbolic motifs referencing his arrival in Neapolis, the ancient name of Kavala.
