Cambridge Arts Theatre

About

Cambridge Arts Theatre, founded in 1936 by economist and arts patron John Maynard Keynes, is one of the UK’s leading regional theatres, bringing world‑class drama, dance, opera, and comedy to the heart of the city. Located on Peas Hill, it has hosted an extraordinary range of performances, from Margot Fonteyn’s first Swan Lake to Harold Pinter’s premiere of The Birthday Party. Over the decades, it has welcomed West End transfers, national tours, and the work of acclaimed companies such as the National Theatre, Shakespeare’s Globe, and Cheek by Jowl, as well as nurturing early careers of stars like Ian McKellen, Emma Thompson, and Stephen Fry. The theatre is also home to Cambridge’s much‑loved annual Christmas pantomime and the triennial Cambridge Greek Play. Following a major front‑of‑house redevelopment in 2013, it continues to thrive as a vibrant cultural hub, offering audiences an exceptional programme that enriches the city’s artistic life while preserving its historic charm.
