The Basil & Elise Goulandris Foundation Museum in Athens is a cultural gem that opened its doors in October 2019, fulfilling the long-held dream of its founders to share their exceptional art collection with the public. Located in the Pangrati district, the museum is housed in a beautifully restored neoclassical building complemented by a modern extension, offering a harmonious blend of classic and contemporary architecture. The museum's collection is renowned for its breadth and quality, featuring works by some of the most influential artists of the 19th and 20th centuries. Visitors can admire masterpieces by Vincent van Gogh, Pablo Picasso, Claude Monet, Paul Cézanne, Henri Matisse, Jackson Pollock, and Alberto Giacometti, among others. The collection also includes significant pieces by prominent Greek artists such as Yannis Tsarouchis, Nikos Hadjikyriakos-Ghika, and Yiannis Moralis, highlighting the rich tapestry of Greek modern art. Opened in October 2019, the museum spans 11 floors and features exhibition galleries, an auditorium, a children’s workshop, a library with over 6,000 art books, and a café-restaurant. The collection includes works by renowned artists such as Cézanne, van Gogh, Monet, Degas, Picasso, Kandinsky, Miró, Giacometti, Pollock, Bacon, and Lichtenstein, alongside celebrated Greek artists. The museum’s architecture blends a contemporary structure with a restored 1920s neoclassical building, creating a unique cultural space. It is easily accessible via public transportation, with Evangelismos metro station nearby. Visitors can explore permanent and temporary exhibitions, attend guided tours, and participate in educational programs.
