Daphni Monastery is an 11th-century Byzantine monastery located northwest of central Athens in the suburb of Chaidari. It stands along the Sacred Way, an ancient road connecting Athens to Eleusis. The monastery is a UNESCO World Heritage site, renowned for its stunning gold-ground mosaics depicting scenes from the life of Christ. Originally built on the ruins of a temple dedicated to Apollo, it has undergone restoration following earthquake damage in 1999. Nearby, visitors can explore the forested Aigaleo Mountain, which offers scenic hiking trails. The archaeological site of Eleusis, famous for its ancient mysteries, is a short drive away.
