The Numismatic Museum in Athens is one of the oldest state museums in Greece, established in 1834. It's housed in the beautifully decorated Iliou Melathron, a neo-Renaissance palace built in 1878-1879 as the residence of renowned German archaeologist Heinrich Schliemann. The museum boasts an impressive collection of around 500,000 exhibits, including ancient and modern Greek coins, medals, weights, and seals. The permanent exhibition showcases coins from antiquity to modern times, with notable collections of ancient Greek, Roman, Byzantine, and medieval coins. Visitors can explore the genesis of currency, its manufacturing method, and spread in the ancient Greek world. The museum also features a laboratory for coin conservation, an archive, and a library with approximately 12,500 books. Located in the Kolonaki district near Syntagma Square, the museum is easily accessible by public transport.
