Burg Blomendal in Bremen is the city’s only preserved medieval castle and the oldest secular building in the region, offering both history and cultural life in a unique setting. Built in 1354 by the knights von Oumünde, this moated castle in the district of Blumenthal stands at the confluence of the Aue and Becke streams. Over the centuries, it has witnessed feuds, ownership changes, and political shifts, from Bremen’s council wars to Swedish and Danish rule, before becoming part of Hanover and later Prussia. Since 1973, Burg Blomendal has been under monument protection, preserving its historic architecture and 19th-century outbuildings. Inside, visitors can discover the Stadtteil- und Heimatmuseum Blumenthal, which tells the story of the castle and its surroundings with artifacts and exhibitions. The castle is also a lively cultural venue, hosting concerts, lectures, weddings, and community events in its atmospheric halls such as the Rittersaal and rustic barn. Surrounded by parkland, it offers a picturesque backdrop for both leisure and celebration. Today, Burg Blomendal is more than a monument—it is a living landmark where history, heritage, and community come together in Bremen’s northernmost district.
