Metalhenge in Bremen is a striking fusion of art, astronomy, and urban renewal, rising from the city’s highest artificial elevation—a former landfill in Blockland. Opened in July 2021, this circular monument was conceived by artist Thomas Roth in collaboration with the Bremen sanitation department. It features 25 rusted steel steles, arranged to mirror celestial alignments, echoing the layout of England’s Stonehenge. The installation is not only a visual landmark but also an astronomical observatory, with sightlines marking solstices, equinoxes, and zenith stars. The site includes an audioguide, planet trail, and panoramic viewing platform, offering educational and contemplative experiences. Metalhenge transforms a place once associated with waste into a space of reflection and cosmic connection. It stands as a symbol of Bremen’s commitment to sustainability, creativity, and public engagement—inviting visitors to explore the intersection of science, myth, and landscape.
Bremen Germany
Metalhenge in Bremen is a unique outdoor art installation and observation point located on Bremen’s highest elevation, the 40-meter-high hill of the former Blockland landfill. This 29-hectare area, which was transformed from a waste dump into a public recreational space, features tall metal steles arranged in a Stonehenge-inspired circle. These metal pillars serve as an astronomical landmark, marking the rising and setting points of stars such as Aldebaran and Betelgeuze, as well as the sun and moon. Open year-round, Metalhenge offers panoramic views across Bremen and its surrounding landscapes, making it a favored spot for hiking and sightseeing. The blend of environmental renewal, artistic expression, and astronomical significance makes Metalhenge a compelling and contemplative destination that highlights Bremen’s innovative approach to urban nature.
