Spitzen Gebel is Bremen’s oldest surviving town house and a beloved architectural curiosity nestled in the historic city center. Dating back to 1400, this narrow, gabled building was originally constructed as a merchant’s house and later served as a wine tavern. Its name—“Spitzen Gebel,” meaning “pointed gable”—refers to the steep, triangular façade that makes it instantly recognizable. The building’s timber-framed upper floors and brick base reflect typical Hanseatic design, while its compact footprint showcases medieval urban density. Over the centuries, it has housed various trades and businesses, including a barber shop and a shoemaker’s workshop. Today, Spitzen Gebel operates as a traditional pub, preserving its rustic charm and offering visitors a taste of Bremen’s convivial spirit. Inside, guests can admire historic interiors and enjoy local fare in a setting that feels untouched by time. The building is a listed monument and a cherished piece of Bremen’s living heritage.

Spitzen Gebel, located at No. 1 Hinter dem Schütting near Bremen’s historic market square, is the oldest town house and last medieval middle-class house in Bremen, originally built around 1400. It features a distinctive pointed gable that gives the building its name. Over the centuries, it has served various purposes including a wine house, butcher’s shop, tavern, and in 1913, an office for the Vereinigten Klavierträger (United Piano Movers). The building was heavily damaged in World War II but was carefully restored by 1950. Today, Spitzen Gebel operates as a popular tavern known for a unique tradition dating back to the piano movers: patrons enjoy taking a "Sluk ut de Lamp" (swig from the lamp) serving schnapps from a lamp, a distinctive local custom. The building is an important heritage site located near the Bremen Town Hall, Roland Statue, and Schütting, surrounded by Bremen’s bustling historic center.
