Atlantis House (Haus Atlantis) in Bremen is a striking example of avant-garde architecture and cultural ambition, located in the heart of Böttcherstraße. Commissioned by coffee merchant Ludwig Roselius and designed by Bernhard Hoetger in 1931, the building was inspired by the myth of Atlantis and the idea of a lost Nordic civilization. Its original façade featured futuristic curves and glass brick elements, symbolizing the fusion of myth, science, and modernity. Inside, the “Treppenhaus der Erkenntnis” (Stairway of Insight) led visitors through a symbolic journey of enlightenment. Though damaged during World War II, the building was reconstructed with a simplified exterior, losing some of its original expressionist flair. Today, Atlantis House serves as a hotel and event space, but its legacy as a bold artistic experiment remains. It reflects Roselius’s vision of Böttcherstraße as a cultural corridor and stands as a testament to Bremen’s unique blend of legend, architecture, and intellectual curiosity.
Bremen Germany
Atlantis House in Bremen, located within the historic Böttcherstraße, is a striking example of German interwar architecture, completed in 1931 and designed by artist Bernhard Hoetger. It represents a fusion of Art Deco and Expressionist styles, with its facade adorned with geometric patterns and symbolic motifs that evoke mystical and esoteric themes. Originally conceived as a center for studying Atlantis, the building featured a lecture hall, exhibition space, and the mystical Himmelssaal (Heaven Hall), characterized by a parabolic dome and symbolic mosaics designed to inspire spiritual reflection. Despite heavy damage during World War II, the building was reconstructed and now forms part of a Radisson Blu Hotel, where it still retains elements of its original design, including the Himmelssaal, available for guided tours.
