Platz des Unsichtbaren Mahnmals

About

Platz des Unsichtbaren Mahnmals in Saarbrücken is a powerful site of remembrance that challenges visitors to reflect on history in a subtle yet profound way. Conceived by artist Jochen Gerz and students of the Saarbrücken Art Academy in the early 1990s, the “Invisible Memorial” consists of thousands of paving stones beneath the square, each engraved with the names of Jewish cemeteries destroyed during the Nazi era. By embedding the inscriptions underground, the memorial emphasizes absence and silence, reminding us of what was lost and cannot be fully restored. The square itself appears ordinary at first glance, but its hidden layers invite deeper engagement, turning everyday space into a place of memory. Today, Platz des Unsichtbaren Mahnmals stands as a unique example of conceptual public art, symbolizing both the weight of history and the responsibility of remembrance in contemporary society.

Location

The Platz des Unsichtbaren Mahnmals, or the Square of the Invisible Memorial, is located in Saarbrücken at the forecourt of Saarbrücken Castle. This poignant memorial to Jewish cemeteries was created by art professor Jochen Gerz and students, featuring engraved cobblestones with the names of Jewish cemeteries, placed face down to symbolize neglect and invisibility. The site is within walking distance of Saarbrücken’s city center, where visitors can also explore attractions such as Saarbrücken Castle, the Old Town, and local museums. The square stands as a silent but powerful reminder against racism and antisemitism, and its unique concept draws many visitors interested in its historical and artistic significance.
