Puerta de Elvira is one of Granada’s most evocative historical gateways, marking the ancient entrance to the city from the west and standing as a powerful reminder of its medieval past. Originally built during the Zirid period and later expanded under the Nasrids, the gate once formed part of the city’s defensive walls, welcoming traders, travelers, and dignitaries into the bustling heart of Islamic Granada. Its massive horseshoe arch, framed by sturdy stonework, reflects the architectural language of Al‑Andalus and hints at the grandeur the city once displayed. Although only part of the original structure survives, Puerta de Elvira retains a commanding presence at the edge of the Albaicín, connecting modern Granada with its layered history. Today it serves as both a symbolic threshold and a striking urban landmark, inviting visitors to imagine the vibrant life that once passed beneath its arch and to explore the historic neighborhoods that unfold beyond it.

Puerta de Elvira is located at Plaza del Triunfo 19, postcode 18010, on the eastern edge of Granada's historic centre marking the entrance to the Albaicín neighbourhood along Calle Elvira. This 11th-century Nasrid archway, once the city's main gate from Medina Elvira, anchors the lively Jardines del Triunfo gardens opposite, amid buzzing bus stops and the Column of the Immaculate Conception. Nearby, Calle Elvira teems with tapas bars and shops leading to Plaza Nueva and the Alhambra ascent, while the Albaicín's whitewashed alleys branch off toward San Nicolás viewpoint and Granada Cathedral lies a short stroll west. ​
