Palacio de la Madraza, founded in 1349 by Yusuf I, stands as one of Granada’s most evocative reminders of its Nasrid past. Once the city’s foremost Islamic university, it blended scholarship, theology, and law within an elegant palace whose refined stucco work and geometric decoration echoed the intellectual spirit of the era. After the Christian conquest, the building was transformed yet preserved as a civic institution, allowing its layered history to remain visible in its architecture. Today it forms part of the University of Granada, where visitors can admire its restored mihrab, graceful courtyard, and richly carved interiors. The palace offers a rare glimpse into medieval Andalusian learning and continues to serve as a cultural venue, linking contemporary Granada with the scholarly traditions that once shaped the city.

Palacio de la Madraza is located on Calle Oficios, right in the historic centre of Granada, just behind the Granada Cathedral and on the edge of the old Alcaicería market district. It stands opposite the Royal Chapel (Capilla Real) and only a short walk from Plaza de las Pasiegas, placing it within minutes of major sights such as the cathedral complex and the traditional shopping streets around Bib-Rambla and the Alcaicería.
