The Royal Chancellery of Granada stands as one of the most significant Renaissance institutions in Spain, symbolising the authority of the Catholic Monarchs after the conquest of the city. Established in the early 16th century as the highest court of appeal for southern Spain, the building reflects the power and order the new rulers sought to impose. Its façade combines sober classical lines with heraldic motifs, while the interior reveals an elegant courtyard framed by arcades and stone columns. Over the centuries, the Chancellery shaped legal and administrative life across Andalusia, leaving a deep imprint on the region’s judicial history. Today it houses the Superior Court of Justice of Andalusia, preserving its original function while offering visitors a striking example of Granada’s transition from medieval kingdom to Renaissance city.
Granada SpainThe Royal Chancellery of Granada is located on Plaza Nueva, one of the main historic squares in the heart of Granada’s old town, at the foot of the Albaicín district. It stands by the Darro River near Plaza de Santa Ana, a short walk from Carrera del Darro, the Paseo de los Tristes and the access route that leads up towards the Alhambra hill, with bars, hotels and other historic buildings surrounding the square.
